If it wasn’t apparently obvious by this point, The Third’s story doesn't take itself particularly seriously. The Saints aren’t about to let that stand, however, and you, the boss (who in my case was Hulk Hogan with a zombie voice), have to take charge of your team and conduct a series of increasingly bizarre missions in order to take the fight to the Syndicate on their home turf of Steelport and rest influence back. Saints Row: The Third kicks off with the Saints gang, fresh from having taken full control of the city of Stillwater previously, finding their influence wrested away when a new faction, the Syndicate, comes in and buys off everyone that the Saints were paying money to control. As it turns out, second time may be the charm, because this is a noticeable graphic upgrade on what came before, and a release worthy of wearing the remastered label. After the somewhat disappointing definitive edition for Saints Row 4, Volition looks to improve on its remastering efforts with the third game in the Saints Row series. Saints Row recasts the purple-clad gang as a group of young friends in the southwest USA-inspired city of Santo Ileso who’ve seen their ambitions in life stifled, and so they bind together with the aim of not starting a mere street gang, but instead building an entire criminal empire. And speaking as someone whose favorite game in the series is Saints Row The Third, I was pleased to see that Volition seems to be aiming for a similar tone for the reboot, rather than the more GTA-clone feel of the first two and the over-the-top ridiculousness of the most recent two. I got a look at a gameplay demo of Volition’s freshly announced, co-op-enabled project, which is due out relatively soon on Februfor PC as well as both current- and last-gen Xbox and PlayStation consoles. And after last week's blatant tease, neither is the fact that it's a total reboot of the decade-and-a-half-old open-world crime saga.
That a new Saints Row game is in development isn’t a surprise.
